Evil Dead (1981)

The premise is simple… Five friends take a trip to a cabin in the woods (big shock  there) where they unknowingly release flesh-possessing demons.

With a remake of the movie The Evil Dead on the horizon. I couldn’t help but to revisit the original. This campy & obvious low budget banger is one of my favorite old horror movies. If you haven’t seen this one yet, I strongly suggest it, especially if you plan on seeing the remake. Yes, it’s a low budget film… yes, it’s campy, yes it has strange dark humor and finally, yes it has a bazar tree-vine sex scene, but still … this is a must see for any horror movie person. It’s not a very scary movie but it has its moments. I’m not a huge fan of low budget movies, simply for the fact that the acting is usually extremely bad (which makes me see why actors like Leonardo DiCaprio & Colin Farrell get paid so much). But there’s something about this one that makes me a lover. Maybe it has some nostalgia attached to it having me recall watching it with friends cracking up and having a good time in the 80s. I was probably high at the time.

This was Sam Raimi’s first full length movie. As sound effects, he used high-tech techniques such as breaking celery stalks in half to simulate the breaking of bones. With that kind of ingenuity back in the 80’s, how can you Not be a fan. I am curious how the remake on this is going to be. If they make it too scary and not campy with dark humor, then boooo. Those are part of the reasons the original is loved by many. To me, it’s one of the best horrors of the 80’s, not that the 80’s produced the best horrors of all times.
